Taylor Hicks Delivers A Chirstmas Present To The Soul Patrol And Asia!

The Soul Patrol has spent the past month reminiscing about Taylor's Christmas performances last year. We've been missing the Soul Man, since he's been on his much deserved break. A few weeks ago, he sent the Soul Patrol an audio message at THQ wishing everyone a happy holiday season and letting us know he had a few "gigs" in December.
Little did we know, that he had been invited to perform on the first ever Asian Idol!
An honor for Taylor and a Christmas present for his Soul Patrol!
Taylor Hicks you have made us proud!!! Not only did America get Taylor Hicks right - so did another continent! Congratulations Taylor! Have a wonderful Christmas and may you be blessed even MORE in 2008!!!!

The Asian Idol performances were an absolute dee-light!

Eighteen-year-old Leon Jackson won "The X Factor" competition this month in Britain. He praised the show for teaching him how to be a "performer", not just a singer. Taylor is the consummate performer. He is the whole package, the spicy enchilada.

There is a serious difference between being a singer and a performer. There are lots of great singers, but only a handful of good performers, and even fewer great performers. Like a carpenter that owns every tool, chisel, and stain, but lacks the passion, finesse, or desire to create something of lasting beauty – a great singer that has the genetic disposition to hit ever note, but lacks the desire/skill to reach an audience on an emotional level will always be “just a singer”.

There are great performers in New York City and at the Four Square Pentecostal Church in Reseda, California – congregation fifty. Marketing, silicon, and an over appreciation of youth/celebrity culture has allowed singers without any type of performance skills to appear on Billboard’s charts and fill concert arenas. Many of these singers would not qualify for the Christmas solo back in Reseda.

In a great article in Forbes Magazine (11/06), there was serious and scholarly discussion about what it takes to become a “great performer” in any realm. The magazine concludes, "The critical reality is that we are not hostage to some naturally gifted level of talent. We can make ourselves what we will. Strangely, this idea is not popular. People hate abandoning the notion that they would coast to fame and riches if they found their talent. However, that view is tragically constraining, because when they hit life’s inevitable bumps in the road, they conclude they just aren’t gifted and give up.”

Taylor never gave up and his live performances prove it.

His triumph on Asian Idol is a sweet reminder of what the Soul Patrol felt back during the halcyon days of American Idol, when we were absolutely positive that Taylor would win the competition and sell a gazillion records. At the time, what we did not know and what many of us still fail to appreciate is that as a “great performer” Mr. H does it for the audience whether he arrives by limo or cargo van. I am not suggesting that the show for an intimate group of 500 is the same as it for a full theater of 3,000. Rather, the honesty in the musicianship and the nuances in the vocals are just as rich whether he is performing to an audience in Alabama or Asia.

Whatever the future holds for Mr. Hicks he will come by it honestly. Winston Churchill said, “Never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.''

I look forward to seeing Taylor perform for many years to come in small clubs, on cable and in cathedrals.

Ah, to have been in the audience! What a great performance Taylor gave those lucky enough to be there! And how fortunate we are to be able to share those moments via the internet! Taylor looked happy and excited, and his face radiated that excitement! What a wonderful experience for him, jet-lag and all! WOOO HOOO!

Taylor is Taylor no matter if he is in America or overseas. He is truly entertaining and it was awesome to see that no matter where he goes, he remains true to his roots and to his music. Like Taylor said, Soul Patrol!
